Tommy Perman is an artist who challenges you to notice and delight in the details of the design decisions that surround you. “Leith in Black and Red” is a folio of prints which boasts a bold red and black palette and continues his series of sought-after studies of urban areas. Tommy explores Leith’s characterful streets and the idiosyncratic design choices made by shop owners, town planners and the local residents alike. This subtle playfulness is spelt out most clearly as he gleefully highlights the unique, nameless shop signage reading “Bacon Rolls Etc”.

“Brusnwick Street Stairs” (above) was once a busy access point to the local post office depot intended to transport the public, parcels and Posties safely to and from the building, but the foliage has overgrown creating a treacherous path. Throughout the exhibition, re-appropriation, protection and faded glory become apparent themes: the heavily safe-guarded yet derelict property with welcoming signage; the deliberate and practical modifications made to listed buildings which contradict their original aesthetic or function. The artist’s own design decisions are carried out with the same scrutiny he reflects in his work. This exhibition includes a variety of print techniques, paper types, editioning procedures and application of his work. Including some limited edition skateboards printed in collaboration with FOCUS, a superb local skate shop. Alongside his new works, we will be exhibiting a handful of pieces from his wider collection of studies, including depictions of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and buildings in the surrounding East End of Glasgow. All works available from www.ediburghart.com from April 27th and prices start at £15 for a poster of “Brunswick Street Stairs”.

Leith is a district in the north of Edinburgh. Once a busy industrial port, Leith is now packed with local businesses, restaurants and bars and is home to a cross section of Edinburgh’s population including artist, designer and musician, Tommy Perman. Tommy graduated from Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, in 2002, since which time he helped established FOUND, an art collective and band who have received numerous awards including Creative Scotland’s Vital Spark Award, a Scottish BAFTA and The List Award for outstanding contribution to Scottish art in 2011. As a solo artist Tommy has exhibited widely around the UK as well as Holland, USA and Canada. Tommy recently left FOUND to concentrate on his own artwork and to spend time with his son Patrick who was born on 18 January 2013.

The Vikings returned to Edinburgh on Friday February 22nd, for the latest evening of creative entertainment at The National Museum of Scotland. This multi-award winning event called RBS Museum Lates is a regular favorite in The Red Door Gallery calendar as it gives us the chance to commission some participatory projects from one of the highly talented artists and illustrators we work with. Astrid Jaekel’s bold use of monochrome seemed the perfect fit for this Viking themed evening!

Astrid created 8 DIY badge designs which referenced tapestries, bed posts, coins and folklore all to be found in the Museum’s Viking exhibition (on display until May 12th). Her final black and white pieces were delightfully witty and playful but had enough room for the Museum Lates guests to colour them in. They varied in complexity, which satisfied the speedy novice through to the painstaking professional as they added colour and text to the unfinished badges. Ashley and Lindsey were on hand to help cut and stamp the badges into their durable shells, so everyone left with a truly unique, wearable artwork!

In keeping with the Viking theme, Astrid also designed a Cut-out & Make Viking Drinking Horn, inspired by the myth that Viking’s wore horns on their helmet – they actually wore horns around their necks and used them to drink their water… or something a little more alcoholic from! We were on hand with a Runic Alphabet so the participants could add their own secret message to the drinking horn or badge designs. The sharp font gives a definate style and the people we were chatting with seemed to either write their name, or get a little rude!

Rude or polite, we would love to see photo’s of your badges and drinking horns so please email them to nicky@edinburghart.com or tweet them to us. You can also post them on our Facebook page, where lots of our photos from the night are up - and there are some good snaps in there so please have a peep!

There was an exhibit of some of Astrid Jaekel’s works on the night, along with other pieces by The Lindstrom Effect, Mr Millerchip, Mrs Eliot Books, Laurie Hastings and many others. If you would like to see some more works by Astrid Jaekel, please click here - more to be added this week! If a little something caught your eye, drop an email to nicky@edinburghart.com or call 01314773255 and we will trace it back for ya.

As always, thanks to The National Museum of Scotland for letting us join in the fun, to Astrid for all her beautiful works and y’all for making it such ruddy fun! Museum Lates is back on May 17th and we think this may be the best yet, so keep the date free and check here regularly for notification of ticket sales!

So it’s February and we are fast approaching Valentines Day!! The shops are laden with chocolates, flowers and fuzzy litttle toys!! eek!!
Why not buy your special lady or man something a little bit more personal this year?
What could be more romantic than buying them one of these gorgeous unique Heart Pin Cushions by the ever talented Sophie Elm of Jeff Josephine Fame!!!Sweetheart’ pin cushions were made in the First World War, often by convalescing and disabled soldiers as well as civilians to be given to their loved one. Many were given to sailors by their sweethearts to remind them of them on their long voyages at sea. They were covered in beads, ribbons, lace and fabric badges of the persons battalion, or sometimes a poem………. How Romantic!!The design has been linocut and then hand block printed on a light cream cotton sateen fabric. The front design has three colours, and the back one colou,r and just a beautiful with space for you to add your loved ones initials.
These are truly unique and I’m sure that special lady would be very happy to receive one of these for Valentines Day!!They can be found in our online shop or why not pop in to the gallery to see them, along with lots of other alternative Valentines Treats.Give the chocolates and flowers a miss this year and buy your sweetheart something extra special!!
