THE STORY OF THE KIBBO TRIBE
The Kibbo of northern Canada have a non-traditional family set up. Each child is raised within the community, Aunts, uncles, cousins and friends serve as mothers and fathers. Tribe members often die never having known who their biological parents were. At a certain age, a child must enter the woods and stay until they experience a vision. When they return they create a piece of jewellery that represents their vision. This is interpreted by the elder, and their role in the community is decided. It also creates a sense of individual identity for tribe members.
