Northern Lights A3 Risograph by Ploterre

After spending a year tracking data on the northern lights, Ploterre noticed a lot of activity happened during daylight hours. Are there other patterns in the data and can be used to find the best chance of seeing this amazing spectacle on their doorstep.

So it turns out that activity happens at all hours of day. Not just at night and not just in winter.

During a solar period (roughly 12 years) there are one or two years that are classed as the solar maximus. The time period where there is pretty much some activity every single day. This is only discovered once the year is out and you realise it was a maximus from the data.

This chart looks at data from Shetland, the most northerly point in the UK, during the last solar period and presents the peak activity by week and year. The solar maximus is highlighted near the centre and more lines indicate more activity.
