The Finman screen print is inspired by 17th-Century reports of “mermaid” sightings on Orkney, and their connection to the myths of the Finfolk and Selkies.
The seal and the Finman are swimming through a beautifully toned sea, along side boats and spectators.
Selkies are creatures of Scottish/Irish mythology, also known as the Seal People. They can discard their sealskins and walk as humans on land, and there are many, many songs and stories to be heard and yet more to be invented.
The beautiful proportions of this print emphasise the sense of scale, wonder and mystery the sea can evoke.
