Winter Journey A6 Zine
In the middle of the antarctic winter, Emperor penguins hatch their eggs on the sea ice. In 1911 some explorers from Captain Scott’s expedition to Antarctica went on a scientific mission to gather some penguin eggs, afterwards named “the Worst Journey in the World” (in Apsley Cherry-Garrard’s 1922 book of the same name). This riso-printed art zine is about that astonishing journey!
This artist’s book takes the shape of an A6-size folded zine and cover with flaps. There is always something for you to discover while turning and unfolding, and the inner pages fold out to an A3 size image that looks like a game board – though the actual game might be excruciatingly slow to play, emulating the ordeals endured by the explorers!
The book itself takes you on a visual journey of “the weirdest bird’s-nesting expedition that ever was” and is a tribute to fellowship and endurance. It makes a perfect gift for polar enthusiasts, scientists, explorers, lovers of adventure tales, and that simplest and greatest treasure of all – best friends.
