In Scottish and Irish folklore, the Cailleach is a powerful goddess figure known as a creator, weather deity and guardian of the land. She is often associated with wild animals such as red deer, boar, and even wolves. As a primal figure tied to winter, wilderness, and transformation, the Cailleach shares the wolf’s deep ties to the land, and their now absence from it. Wolves roamed Scotland until possibly the 1700’s, but it’s uncertain when the last one died or was killed. Faoilleach is the Scottish Gaelic calendar term for the period of January, and the roots of the word, fáel (later faol) means ‘wolf’.
