this print is an update to the original tree rings risograph and is based on data collected from daily weather data in the uk over the past 50 years.
new tree rings grow each year and are directly affected by temperature and rainfall. the tree rings here have been created using weather data and so are literally created from temperature and rainfall data.
the data used to shape the tree rings is based on daily average temperature data for the uk and each ring represents a year. the outer tree ring reflects the data from 2021.
the thickness of each line is based on the total rainfall per year. the thicker the ring, the wetter the year.
although 50 years have been used to create the tree trunk, as each ring is made up of two lines (to denote the rainfall), there are 100 lines in total. this is significant as on average, a 100 year old tree would be roughly the same width as this print (300mm). different tree species grow at different rates, but this figure has been reached by averaging the growth rate across species.
the overall design is intended to look like the cross section of a tree trunk. however, when hung as a set of both the pink and green version, the result is a wooden skateboard of sorts.
the print is a risograph, which has been printed by earth press risograph studio. risograph is a cross between a screen print and a photocopy and uses soy based inks, which are environmentally friendly.
the paper has been made in yorkshire using fsc pulp.
